Dune Action Workshops Supporting Coastal CommunitiesA national series of hands-on workshops empowering communities to protect and restore Ireland’s dune systems through practical, nature-based climate action.
ACT is delighted to announce a new series of Dune Action workshops taking place across Ireland this spring, supporting coastal communities to respond to the growing challenges of erosion and climate change.
Delivered as part of the Beaches and Dunes Climate Adaptation Programme, Dune Action is a collaborative initiative bringing together ACT alongside Clean Coasts, Climate Action Regional Office (CARO), Leave No Trace Ireland, University College Dublin and University of Galway. The programme is working with 12 coastal communities nationwide to build local capacity for dune protection and restoration.
Sand dunes act as a natural first line of defence against coastal flooding and erosion, yet these vital landscapes are increasingly under pressure. The upcoming workshops form Day 1 of a two-part training programme led by ACT, focusing on the fundamentals of dune systems through the 3Ss framework — Sand, Species and Space. Participants will gain a practical understanding of how dunes function, how to assess their health, and how nature-based solutions can be applied to strengthen coastal resilience.
Workshops are taking place at locations including Banna, Spanish Point, North Bull Island, Portballintrae and Castlerock, following a successful launch in Tyrella earlier this month. With limited places available, the sessions are designed for community groups, local authorities, educators and anyone interested in climate action at a local level.
Day 2 of the programme, scheduled for later in 2026, will move on-site to deliver hands-on dune restoration through activities such as dune grass planting, further embedding knowledge through action.
By combining science, practical tools and community engagement, Dune Action reflects ACT’s ongoing commitment to supporting the green transition through place-based, nature-led solutions.
